booknotes: Confessions of an Advertising Man
In all honesty, I initially bought this book after watching Mad Men, which was inspired by the life and practices of Ogilvy himself (the man, the legend!), and I was keen to find out more about the basics of advertising, and see if the TV series really was an accurate portrayal of life in advertising in the 60s.
I wasn’t disappointed, the book explored topics useful for all creative and business-led professions: image and brand, originality, employees, research, and ultimately, how to capture an audience.
This information is gold-dust for employees throughout a company in any industry or sector, with valuable insights that can be easily adapted for different organisations.
Quick quote: “Big ideas are usually simple ideas.”

booknotes: 101 Things I Learned in Business School
Another book recommendation from The Futur, I read this book because there was a gap in my knowledge about the business side of design.
One of my motivators is ABL (Always Be Learning) - if there’s something I don’t know, I’ll try to learn about it.
I enjoyed the concise, bite-sized layout of information - particularly useful when I didn’t know much about the particular subject.
It’s an excellent read for anyone looking to brush-up on their business knowledge.
I made a lot of nudenotes on this book - 16 pages’ worth - and there’s lots more that I wasn’t able to cover, so it’s well-worth a read to those who want to find out more.
booknotes: Brand Intervention
One of the first books I read when starting my nudenotes, Brand Intervention, by the amazing David Brier, should be in the library of all marketers, branding professionals or creatives.
I came across the book whilst watching a video on The Futur’s Youtube channel, after they interviewed David.
David’s focus on a human-centric approach to branding makes for a compelling and thought-provoking read.
I blitzed through it, cover-to-cover, in just under a week (an impressive feat for me!), simply because I was transfixed.
The clear and concise design of the information is easily digestible - there is no fat or filler, just pure meat!
Brand Intervention opened my eyes to a whole host of new branding ideas - I implore everyone to read this book, you’ll never look at branding the same way again!
Shortly after I posted the nudenotes of Brand Intervention, David messaged me to say he wanted to have a video interview to discuss my other influences and what I loved about his book.
